Who are the classes suitable for?
The 10 week Art Course is tailored for adult beginners as well as for students who have already done some art and thus consider themselves an intermediate. The class is ‘in-person’ with a group of like-minded students, all ready to learn, make new friends, and have a great time enjoying the mindful process of art.
If you aren’t sure whether to join as a beginner or intermediate, get in touch and we’ll discuss your needs. We are learner focused and will help you on your personal journey.
What do you teach?
Beginners will spend some time learning the basics of how to draw and paint, whilst intermediates will start off with slightly different projects, helping us establish skill levels. We are very much learner led and will adapt our 1 to 1 tuition to help students on their journey.
Students get to explore and develop their skills using a wide range of media on every course, including pencil, charcoal, watercolour and acrylics. We help students use the tools, understand how they work and how to use different techniques to achieve different effects. We also use other media such as soft pastels, watercolour pencils, gouache, coloured pencils, ink, and more, each term varies.
What is each lesson like?
Each 3 hour lesson commences with a live demonstration on how to do the project, this is followed by lots of 1 to 1 help from us, showing you how to adjust your drawings and paintings as we steer you through your projects. In addition, we give students documents in class, including step by step instructions, reminders, helpful tips and tricks sheets and a selection of resources to use in class to support them with their project. There are complementary refreshments; tea, coffee and biscuits available halfway through so that students can take a break from their painting, chat to their new friends and come back with fresh eyes.
What if I have to miss a lesson?
We also record the demonstration and can make that available to you, which is extremely helpful when students miss lessons due to holidays or appointments etc. Students find this very valuable as they can revisit the documents and videos at home whenever they want to, thus helping with their learning. The course fee is for their space on the course, we’re unable to offer drop in sessions or refunds for missed lessons.
What materials do I need to bring?
All the paint, brushes and tools needed will be there waiting for you to use in class so you don’t have to bring your own. Students love that it’s all set out for them when they arrive. The only things we don’t provide are the sketchbooks, paper and pencils as students prefer to take these items home to practice with. You may have these things knocking around at home, if not, we do offer a great value Student Art Bag which is just £25. We also recommend you wear old clothing on the painting weeks… or bring an apron, students tend to keep these in their Student Art Bag so that everything is together.
The student Art Bag includes:
- High-quality A4 Sketchbook containing nice, thick paper of 220gsm, suitable for all media, including watercolour,
- Pencil case containing, 3 pencils – HB, 4B, 8B, an eraser, a sharpener and ruler (Yep, we sometimes use rulers in art)
- A3 specialist paper for each of the projects in the course.
- All contained within a polyholdall case for transporting to and from class.
Some intermediates already have the contents of the Student Art Bag at home, but find it difficult to source the specialist paper so we also offer the specialist paper seperate in a Paper Pack, priced at £13
Both of these options are available at the check out when you purchase your place on the course.
